2017 Rental Boat Safety Resources

The CSBC has included these Transport Canada Rental Boat Safety resources as part of our web site for both Rental Agencies and the general public. If you are a Rental Agency we encourage you to use these materials during the boating season and if you are a renter, we are certain that you will find the materials informative before you head out onto the water in your rented vessel.

Rental Boat Safety Checklists

Canadian law requires anyone operating a power-driven boat to carry proof of competency onboard.  Enforcement agents accept a completed Rental Boat Safety Checklist as proof of competency in a boat rental situation.  These checklists, developed in 2014, feature visual icons and plainly written statements in a ready-to-use format.  They are designed to help rental agency staff easily review important safety information like boat operation, boating safety rules and local hazards with their clients.

Tutorial for Rental Agency Staff

The 30 –minute tutorial is a great tool to help rental agency staff get ready for the season and is perfect for those staff training sessions. The tutorial:

• shows rental agents and their employees how to use the checklists
• highlights the important safety information on the checklists
• describes how to conduct a dockside safety briefing so clients become familiar with the unique features of the boat they are renting and know how to operate it safely
