The CSBC Safe Boating Awareness Week launch effectively kicked off the May 24th Weekend focusing on 5 key messages.
- Wear a Lifejacket
- Don't Drink & Boat
- Take a Boating Course
- Be Prepared - Both You and Your Vessel
- Be Aware of the Dangers of Cold Water Immersion
Launches were held in Halifax, Quebec City, Toronto, Vancouver and Winnipeg.
It was perfect spring weather in Winnipeg, with sunny skies and a calm breeze. Five TV cameras arrived on scene to capture the variety of events and displays promoting boating safety. An 18’ Lund Pro Angler boat complete with all the required safety gear was set up adjacent the speaker’s podium. Dr. Gordon Giesbrecht, aka Professor Popsicle, demonstrated the effects of cold water immersion using a dunk tank and lifeguard instructors who were dropped into water with temperatures hovering around 5 degrees. This provided great visuals for the risks of cold water and an excellent teaching tool bringing awareness about cold water immersion. The Winnipeg Police Service featured an alcohol specialist informing the media about drinking and boating and the consequences. Of course everyone were wearing PFD’s in support and promotion of lifejacket wear. To top the day off, the Provincial Minister of Healthy Living and Seniours attended and proclaimed Safe Boating Awareness Week in the Province of Manitoba.
